Dossier de recherche - BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE - Dashboard Market Overview (en anglais)

At a high level, a performance dashboard is a visual exception report. It displays alerts when performance exceeds predefined thresholds. At a deeper level, a performance dashboard is a layered information delivery system that exposes information to business users on an as-needed basis. When users see an alert in a top-level metric, they drill to lower levels of information to ascertain the cause of the alert and gain better insight into the nature of the issue. In a well-designed performance dashboard, business users can access most information they need to do their jobs within three clicks.

Beyond these conceptual definitions and principles, there is seemingly little commonality among the thousands of performance dashboards that organizations have deployed in the past ten years. Every dashboard looks and functions differently. And most can be built with virtually any type of BI tool in the market today. This makes it challenging to evaluate dashboard products since almost any BI product can qualify as a dashboard tool.

Given this background, this research note focuses on products that are most closely associated with performance dashboards. These are either pure play dashboard products or leading BI tools that customers frequently use to generate dashboard applications.
